今年の西日本は梅雨入りも遅く、7月にならない前からぐったりするような暑さです。
先週はフランスを含むヨーロッパのある地域は44度まで上がった熱波がやってきていました。
そんな今日、7月4日はアメリカの誕生日で独立記念日でFourth of Julyと言います。
日本でいうなら建国記念日。
アメリカに関係のない人にとっては本当に関係のない日ですが、本国ではa big celebration dayです。普段は花火が禁止されている州も多い中、この日ばかりは遊園地などでは打ち上げ花火が上がったりしてきれいです。
NEOではネイティブ講師が3人ともアメリカ人で、今まで退任した講師たちShawnやRJもアメリカ人。かなり以前は独立記念日が土曜などだったときは仕事後に川辺までいって花火でお祝いをしたこともありました。
本国から離れてしまっている彼らですが、この日はだいたい1日の最初の挨拶にHappy Independence Dayと言っています。日本人であれば建国記念日に「おめでとう」と言い合うことはありませんが…
講師のHalが8/3で退任する予定で、その後任講師が決まっています。その彼は北米出身ではなく、別の英語圏出身です。来年はHappy Independence Dayを大々的に言うことはないんだなと思った今日でした。

Here are some pictures from the NEO Spring Picnic, which we held last Sunday at the park near the library. About 40 people came to Futsukaichi Park to enjoy the weather and make some lemonade with us!
It was quite windy and we had to chase paper cups around the park a few times, but the temperature was just right. It got a little cloudy, but never rained.
Our students took turns helping us squeeze the lemons, and we made a few pitchers of both regular and pink lemonade. We also played a few games, including a sack race, a water balloon toss, and watermelon smash. Everyone had a good time and it was a fun way to spend a spring day!
