Last Sunday was NEO’s 13th annual Thanksgiving party. We cooked up the traditional American Thanksgiving dinner.

We ate turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, candied yams, mixed vegetables and dinner rolls. And we also had dessert.

We had apple pie, pumpkin pie and vanilla ice cream for desert.

This year was our biggest party ever, 54 people! This year’s party was also very international, we had guests from 10 different countries: Japan, the USA, Canada, The UK, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, China, Germany and Austria.

Peanut Tofu

An Okinawan Treat

Okinawa is filled with great food, but one of my favorites is peanut tofu – known as ジーマーミ豆腐 in Japanese. It’s a creamy, soft tofu infused with peanut oil, which gives it a dessert-like quality.  The first time I tried it in an izakaya in Naha, I immediately ordered two more. It’s that good.

When I went to Naha last year, a bought a bunch of peanut tofu from a supermarket before coming home. The pre-packaged cups are not nearly as good as the real thing. Not bad, but not great. Still, I enjoyed having a taste of it back in Okayama.

So if you happen to see peanut tofu in a local supermarket, or if you get some as omiyage, give it a try. And if you have a chance to go to Okinawa yourself, go to a restaurant and eat as much as you can!

And please bring some back for me, ok?

Halが先のブログで書いてありましたが、後楽園を英語案内するスーパー小学生くんです。彼が英語学習で使っていたのは有名なDシリーズの自宅教材ですね。親御さんは英語が全く話せないご家庭だそうですが、ご本人さんのセンスの良さ、物怖じせず興味を持つ性格、教材との相性の良さ、何度もその教材を使ったこと、様々な要素が合わさっていると思います。

一般家庭ではそこまでストイックにすることは難しいと思いますが、北欧3国やそこに近いオランダなど、英語が母国語でないにも関わらず英語レベルがネイティブ級であることは有名です。共通していることは、人口が少なく自国のものだけに頼ることができない、英語という手段を使うことで色々な道が開けることを国家全体がよく理解して早くから対応しているようです。小学校から本格的に英語教育が始まりますが、割り当てられている時間も多い、また教材も興味をそそられる教材が開発・使用されていて、カリキュラムはなんと10年に一度は見直しがされているようです。

それに加え、家庭で見るテレビ番組が英語圏で作られたものを多く輸入しそれを字幕付きで放送していることです。自国ですべての番組を作ることが難しいという理由が後押しとなり、質のいい英語番組を字幕付きで流せば幼少期から自宅で英語に触れることができます。楽しい！ということも続けられる理由でしょうね。

私の自宅でも子供が見る時間帯ではテレビは英語番組をつけています。ディズニーチャンネルを始めとしたアメリカ系の番組で、日本語の番組は流していません。親が英語で話しかけることもいいのですが、テレビからは親が話す以外の単語ややり取りを知ることができます。私がどれだけその番組に興味が無く、くだらないなぁ…と思っていても、です！イラストのセンスも私の合格ラインに全然見合っていなくてもグッと堪えています（笑

その分だけ日本のアニメなどは知らないので時々ドラえもんなどのアニメのキャラクターをインターネットで見せて話題に挙げるようにして結構地味に親が努力をしています。

ちなみに。私の子供が気に入ってみている番組のひとつがコレです。（Adventure Time）

My mom sent me a link the other day to a story about Okayama that was on the CBS Evening News, which is a national news program that is shown every weeknight. About 6 million people watch it each night for an hour. CBS is kind of like NHK in Japan - it is a free national TV network that shows the same programs to everyone.

This story is about a boy from Okayama named Takuto Kawakami, who is a tour guide at Korakuen. He is 10 years old, and his English is amazing! His pronunciation is especially good.

The video is only about 2 minutes, but now 6 million people know a little about Korakuen!
